Overview: Egyptian God’s are a major part of the Egyptian religion which the religion is based from myths and rituals. There were so many gods in ancient Egypt but not all were worshipped at one time or in each other’s spot. Most Egyptians worship one god and none of the others, like many different religions in the U.S.A. Egyptians didn’t worship items or animals, but the gods themselves. The Egyptians believe Gods chose their judgment after death which would be decided by what the people did in their lives, either evil or good.
Amun, whose name means “the hidden one,” was the King of all Gods the most powerful God.
Anbus, “Man with jackal head,” he was a jackal and was god of dead. He watched over the preservation of all of the dead bodies.
Atum, “The All or Perfection,” was said to be a creator god and created all gods.
Bastet was the god of protection, the cat was a symbol of Bastet. When Bastet fought to protect king she would have a head of a lion.
Bes is a dwarf who looked like a lion and a human combimined. Bes protected babies and the family and pregant women.
Geb was the brother and husband of Nut. Many Egyptians believed earthquakes were laughter of Geb.
Hapy was the god of floods which people looked forward to grow crops.
Hathor, “House of Horus,” was a goddess with cow ears. Hathor was the goddess of joy and love.
Horus (The One Above All Others) was the sky god and his symbol was the hawk.
Isis, “woman with headdress in the shape of a throne,” protected people in need of help by using magic spells. She was the mother of Horus and Osiris’ wife.
Khepri (He Who is Coming into Being) was the god of three thing the movement of the the sun, rebirth, and also creation. Scarab beetle was a symbol of Khepri.
Khnum was a god with a horned ram as his head. He was a god of creation and of the flooding of the Nile.
Ma’at was a woman with a feather on her head and she was goddess of justice harmony and truth, she brought balance to the Earth.
Nephthys (Lady of the Mansion) was the goddess of protecting the dead; she was shown on many coffins. She was the sister of Isis and Osiris, and the wife/sister of Seth and mother of Anubis.
Nut had a body that went across the sky while wearing a star dress. Nut was goddess of the sky and her body created a canopy over the Earth. Nut was the sister/wife of Geb, and mother of Isis, Osiris, Nepthys, and Seth.
Osiris was a mummified man who was god of the dead, resurrection, fertility, and of the underworld. Osiris was the brother/ husband of Isis, brother of Nepthys and Seth, and father of Horus.
Ptah, wore a tight cloak of white and carried a staff, was the god of craftsmen and also a creator god.
Ra (Sun) was the most important god to ancient Egyptians; he was the god of the sun.
Sekhmet (The Powerful One) was the war goddess who had a head of a female lion.
Seshat was the goddess of measurement and writing, she wears panther skin dress.
Seth the god of chaos had a head of an animal that was unidentifiable; he threatened everything that was in harmony. Seth was the brother of Osiris and Isis, brother/husband of Nepthys.
Shu was the god of air, and separated the earth and the sky. He looked like a lion and had a headdress with feathers.
Sobek, had a head of a crocodile, was god of the Nile who also protected the king.
Tawaret (The Great One) has head of a hippopotamus with the arms and legs of a lion, the back and tail of a crocodile, and the breasts and stomach of a pregnant woman. He was the god of protecting women during pregnancy and childbirth.
Tefnut a goddess with the head of a female lion, she was the goddess of moisture. Tefnut was the wife of Shu and the mother of Nut and Geb Thoth, had the head of an ibis and a writing palette, was the god of knowledge and writing. He gave the gift of hieroglyphic writing.
Every single one of these gods influenced ancient Egyptian’s lives for better or for worse. The gods basically shaped the religion and the civilization of every single Egyptian.
